In the mid 90’s a group of ladies interested in quilting met in the home of Lois Woytenko. By 1998, we were meeting weekly at the Senior Centre to share tips and ideas while building knowledge and friendships. Margaret Stewart moved to Peace River and shared with us the benefits of belonging to a National Guild. By 2002, she had done all the paperwork and we became Valley Peacemakers Quilt Guild and members of CQA/ACC. We began meeting at the Anglican Church Hall. In the spring of 2014 due to flooding we lost most of our records. We continued to meet at the Church Hall until we began renting a space at The Art Hub in the fall of 2022.
Each year we have offered a challenge to our members from Paint Chip Challenge to Triptych to Log Cabin Challenge to Interpretation Of An Idiom. One of our proudest challenges was ‘Connected Piece By Peace’ in which 22 members participated. This project showed at Quilt Canada 2024 in Edmonton.
We have organized weekend retreats where we travelled to Sawmill Creek Cottages, Prairie Inn in Grande Prairie and most recently locally at The Art Hub.
We have hosted workshops where we brought in instructors to learn a technique, some of which were Add A Stripe with Margie Davidson to Photo Illusion with Susan Purney-Mark and workshops to do a project from Gypsy Wife with Dianne Jansson to Twisted Bargello with Carolyn Adams.
Since 2012 we have shown our work annually at the Art Gallery in our local library. As part of this event in 2021, we added the CQA/ACC Viewers Choice Rosette. At the request of the library we were invited to make wall quilts featuring the Boreal Forest. Thirteen members responded and these quilts are on permanent display in the children’s section.
As a guild, we have made compassion quilts for members in need of comfort. We made baby quilts to welcome new babies for two of our members. We have made quilts for raffles in support of Breast Cancer, Cancer, local museum, Rotary House, Fire Department and to help towards a new roof for the Anglican Church in gratitude for their many years of allowing us the use of their venue.
As our Guild continue to grow , we welcome all new members to share our love of quilting!
